Ramsay Electrical Aptitude Test

Mechanical reasoning + basic electrical. Common at non-union and industrial.

What's on it

  • Mechanical reasoning: Gears, pulleys, levers, hydraulics.
  • Basic electrical: Ohm's law, AC vs DC, schematic symbols, simple circuits.
  • Reading schematics and prints.
  • Basic math: Arithmetic, fractions, decimals.

Who uses it

Industrial maintenance, plant electricians, non-union electrical contractors, and some IEC programs.

Difficulty

Lower ceiling than the IBEW test, but trickier if you've never worked with mechanical systems. The mechanical reasoning section trips up office-job applicants.

How to prepare

Get hands-on with mechanical concepts (YouTube "mechanical advantage" is your friend). Memorize Ohm's law and basic circuit rules. Drill schematic symbols.

The Apprentice Bundle includes a Ramsay practice PDF if your program needs it.

FAQ

No. Ramsay tests mechanical aptitude — gears, pulleys, levers — and basic electrical theory. IBEW tests algebra and reading. Different tests, different employers.
