IBEW Interview Questions

The questions a JATC committee actually asks — and the answers that don't get you ranked low.

You passed the aptitude test. The next gate is the committee interview, and your interview score is what actually ranks you for an apprentice slot. The committee — typically the JATC training director plus a few contractors and journeymen — has 10–20 minutes to decide if you're worth a five-year investment. Here's what they ask and what they're listening for.

Why this matters more than the test

Every applicant in the room passed the aptitude test. Band 7+ candidates often get ranked below band 4 candidates because of the interview. Your score is part written test, part interview — and the interview half is more subjective than people expect.

The 10 questions you will hear

1. Why do you want to be an electrician?

What they want: a real reason — a relative in the trade, hands-on work, a layoff that pushed you to find a real career. What they don't want: "good benefits" or "stable job." Everyone says that.

2. What do you know about the IBEW?

Name your local. Know its number. Know roughly how many members it has and what kind of work the local does (commercial, industrial, residential, line work). One sentence about the international is fine.

3. What have you done to prepare for this apprenticeship?

Specific actions: practice tests, math review, talked to a journeyman, toured a job site, read about the trade. Vague "I've been studying" answers don't land.

4. Tell us about a time you worked on a team.

Pick a real story. Construction, sports, military, restaurant — doesn't matter. What matters is that you explain your role, the obstacle, and the outcome. Two sentences each.

5. Tell us about a time you had a conflict with a supervisor or coworker.

Don't say you've never had one. Pick something low-stakes, explain how you handled it without going around the supervisor, and show you can take direction even when you disagree.

6. Are you willing to travel? Work overtime? Work nights?

Yes, yes, yes — and mean it. Apprentices go where the work is. If you can't travel, say so honestly, but understand it ranks you down.

7. How will you handle the math and the night classes on top of full-time work?

Have a plan. "I've talked to my partner / family. Childcare is set. I've practiced the algebra and I know what I'm walking into."

8. What will you do if you don't get accepted this round?

Right answer: keep working in a related trade, retake the test in 6 months, reapply. Wrong answer: "find something else." This is the loyalty question.

9. Do you have reliable transportation?

Yes. Period. If you don't, fix it before the interview. Job sites are not on bus lines.

10. Why should we pick you over the other applicants?

Don't trash other applicants. Two or three concrete things: showed up early, proven work history, did the prep, want this trade specifically. End with: "I'll be here in five years."

What they're actually scoring

  • Reliability. Will you show up every day for five years?
  • Attitude. Will the foreman want you on his crew?
  • Communication. Can you answer a question without rambling?
  • Knowledge of the trade. Did you do your homework or guess?
  • Fit. Are you the kind of person who finishes things?

Day-of checklist

  • Arrive 15 minutes early. Not 5. Not 30.
  • Business casual. Clean shoes. No hat.
  • Phone off, not silent.
  • Bring a copy of your application packet — even if they have it.
  • Firm handshake with everyone. Make eye contact.
  • Thank each committee member by name on the way out.

The interview rewards people who took it seriously. Practice your answers out loud — not memorized, just rehearsed enough to not stumble. Then go pass the test.
